This summer’s soundtrack seems to be Bob Dylan’s “Everything is Broken”: “Seems like every time you stop and turn around, something else has just hit the ground.” I’d like to take a page from my soon-to-be-colleague Lauren Way and ask, “What’s good in your life? What’s bringing you joy? What are your victories, small or large?” As she says, we could sure use some good news right now. The comments form is at your disposal.

I’ll start: We live someplace that looks like this and our neighboring planet looks like this. Breathtaking, both.

I went to my 50th high school reunion on Aug. 2. I’ve been to them all, but this was the best one yet, maybe due in part to the fact that my friends planned ahead and brought a “Happy Birthday” banner (unbeknownst to me!), then posed us all for a picture, with the banner behind me. The first I knew about this was when the photo arrived in the mail!! I’ll be keeping that photo *forever*.

I finally was granted a wonderful opportunity with a great company after almost a year of searching. I had almost given up on a miracle and then one happened. Because I never stopped trying, even in the most difficult moments. And it wasn’t easy. I am thankful for the courage to keep trying!

For the first time in the history of the Fields medal, a woman was awarded one of the four prizes. Grateful for Maryam Mirzakhani for her gifted brain and hard work, and to the awards committee for recognizing the value of her science. Yet another step toward equality in science.

Two months ago I had a brief absence seizure. During that time I function normally, and apparently safely. The doctor said, in no uncertain terms that I was not to drive for six months. SO I am limited physically. Then I have, a month ago, had a minor operation to remove a polyp on my vocal cord. For two weeks I could not speak, and then for two more weeks only in a tiny voice for about ten minutes a day. Communication restriction.
So I ask myself, “What is the lesson I ambling asked to learn?” Dealing with that question has been one of the great pleasures of my life. I don’t have a single answer, but the question continues to tease me. In the meantime, I am finding pleasure in my own company.

So often it’s the little things that can make your day. For my birthday my daughter is baking a cake. This makes me insanely happy.

I’m grateful for people – like Amy – who think a lot about things that matter and post pictures from cameras floating in space and also write about the little things that make up our everydayness. More on my own FB status …

I think I’m getting to an age where I more deeply appreciate just the everyday beingness & fantasticness (and to hell with the programmed underlines telling me those ain’t legitimate words!) of the world itself, of its sheer existence. And with it a more apreciative sense of our history as an often lost, confused & flailing species that is doing its best to figure out this consciousness and kindness thing (hosannas for our efforts!), though we have a long and winding road yet to hoe. And yippee, I get to be a part of it all for a while yet! (Or so I hope…)

Thanks for all of the above, everyone (and thanks be for them!). They cheer my heart.

I’m thankful for having found a professional path that lets me do meaningful work for which I am well-suited, which gives me opportunities to do my small part in pulling the universe’s moral arc, which encourages me towards growth, and which surrounds me with wonderful colleagues and conspirators.
