Based on my own experiences, I accept it as a given that rich, lasting relationships can arise through online connections, via social media and the internet. On Sunday I’ll be talking about that and what it says about the nature of community, and asking how we might expand our sense of connection by using these technologies more as a congregation, just as many (almost all) of us are using them more in the rest of our lives.
How do you currently use social networking and the internet that would translate well to congregational life?

I basically just use email to communicate about church events. Also, I read your blog. And I really don’t want to add more ways of using my computer. I have enough trouble already trying not to get trapped in front of the screen for hours on end. I don’t dare go on Facebook!

Many members of our congregation are on Facebook, so we have a couple members of the Communication Committee whose responsibility it is to monitor the church’s Facebook page and to create FB events for all church events that we want to ensure everyone is aware of (we have a Wednesday evening program that varies each week, as well as other special events related to church life).
Facebook also helps our care committee keep up with the goings on in our members’ lives. That being said, our minister doesn’t actually use it much – she relies on others to share info with her.
